Who we are

History of the SFU Summer Publishing Workshops

The SFU Summer Publishing Workshops moved to Simon Fraser University in 1997. Prior to that, they were run as the Banff Publishing Workshops at the Banff Centre for the Arts.

Started in 1981 by a dedicated group of publishing industry professionals, the workshops were developed to fill a void in publishing education that was identified by the book and magazine publishing industries in Canada.

In 1996, the Banff Centre for the Arts decided not to continue supporting the workshops, and the Canadian Centre for Studies in Publishing negotiated their move to Simon Fraser University. Working with advisory boards from the book, magazine and new media industries, additional workshop tracks and models were developed. Every year individual workshops are reviewed and curriculum is brought up-to-date to reflect the most current trends, issues and need-to-know information.

Industry faculty help develop workshops in response to identified publishing needs which means participants receive the most advanced training anywhere.

Today, the SFU Summer Publishing Workshops attract participants from across Canada and around the world. In 2009, nearly 100 faculty, and over 500 participants, will come to SFU Vancouver in the downtown core for 45 workshops in books, magazines, editing, design, new media, and writing. This is the largest line-up ever and developed from publishing industry needs. Join us, explore the website, and become part of the next generation of publishers.
